Twenty members of the Chamber braved the cold and inclement weather last night to discover what goes bump at the fort.
With the steel doors locked behind us, donned in thick coats, jumpers and hats and armed only with a torch, we were led by our guide Richard around Landguard Fort’s infamously haunted areas……in the dark!
Each eerie room and creepy tunnel had a gruesome story to tell, recounted graphically by our capable guide, with the unnerving ‘thunderless’ lightening creating a perfectly spooky backdrop.
Did she really throw herself off the ramparts over a silk handkerchief? Did he truly bleed to death in the bath? Was the plague and solitary confinement the truth behind his slow painful death? And just who was that watching us all from the window?
I’m not certain any of us had the answers (except perhaps for the figure in the window!), but it definitely gave us all something to talk about when we finished off at the Alex for a bite to eat.
Thanks go to the David and Richard from Landguard Fort for turning out on such a cold evening, and to the Alex for laying on a very tasty spread.
